Check the Thermostat
You might be surprised at the number of HVAC problems that are rooted in unresponsive or malfunctioning thermostats. Make sure the thermostat is at the right temperature and is set to “heating”. It’s fairly common to mistakenly set the thermostat to “fan,” but this can easily be corrected. You may also need to perform a full reset, as well as replace the batteries, if the thermostat still seems to be unresponsive.
No Power
Furnaces burn fuel to generate heat, but they still need power to distribute hot air throughout your home. Carefully inspect the power lines for damage or corrosion. If the furnace has its own circuit breaker, reset it and try turning the furnace on. If it still doesn’t work, schedule an appointment with a heating and air conditioning technician and make sure the issue is addressed as soon as possible.
No Pilot Light
Check underneath the furnace, locate the pilot light and make sure it’s still lit. It’s not uncommon for the pilot light to go out, and this issue can be fixed by simply using a match to relight it.
Insufficient Fuel
If you have a gas-powered furnace, make sure the gas valve is opened fully so the furnace gets enough fuel. A common mistake among homeowners is only partially turning the valve, either through carelessness or due to safety concerns. This is the reason why newer furnaces come with switches or buttons, since valves always have to be either fully opened or fully closed.
