When the colder months of fall and winter roll around, you can expect your heating systems to see plenty of action once again. If you’ve kept up with your heating and air tune-ups and inspections, then you’re in for a warm, comfortable season, apart from one thing: dry air. Heating systems are great at providing you with protection from freezing outdoor temperatures, but they’re also notorious for continuously pumping out dry air that can dry out your skin and sinuses. This is where whole-home humidifiers come in.
Maintenance for whole-home humidifiers should always be done by a licensed, trained professional. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t give it a good cleaning every now and then. Here are a few clean-up tips from our experts at Premier Comfort.
Exterior Cleaning
Before cleaning, make sure that all components are unplugged to avoid any electrical accidents. A whole-home humidifier addition to your air conditioning system will often have a unit that’s prone to mineral deposits. These are typically left behind when moisture evaporates, and can easily be cleaned up and wiped away with a heavily-diluted vinegar solution and a soft cloth. For tougher build-ups, you can use a 50-50 vinegar and water solution instead. Dry all components completely before turning the unit back on.
Check the Drains
The drains themselves are equally vulnerable to mineral deposits and leaks. Inspect the lines carefully and rinse away any stains you spot. You should also clear away any blockages that might cause your humidifier to leak from the drainage line.
Water Reservoir Maintenance
Empty the reservoir at least once every few weeks. Once empty, fill it with water about 2/3 of the way up. Our experts at Premier Comfort Heating and Air recommend also adding a drop of chlorine to stop bacteria from spreading in the container. Give it a good swirl to eliminate any mineral build-up and scaling as well.
