A NATE certification is an important qualification for your heating and air conditioning contractor. The North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is the country’s largest non-profit certification organization for air conditioning, heating, ventilation, and refrigeration technicians. They provide certification tests for installation or service in one or more specialty areas, allowing technicians to prove their knowledge and capabilities.

Why Is NATE Certification Important?
NATE tests assess a candidate’s applied knowledge of their field, determining if they have the knowledge and skills to perform effective heating and air conditioning service and installations. NATE exams are created by the NATE Technical Committee, which is comprised of industry experts. Working with a company that employs NATE-certified technicians is important because these pros have proven themselves capable of meeting NATE’s strict standards.
NATE Certification Tests
NATE offers several tests for heating and air conditioning technicians. This allows technicians to tailor their NATE certification to their skill level and interests. For technicians just entering the industry with little to no formal education or training, NATE offers a Ready-to-Work test. This is an entry-level exam and only earns candidates a certificate, not a NATE certification. To earn a NATE certification, technicians must pass the Core exam and one Specialty exam.
The Core exam tests a technician’s HVAC-specific knowledge, general knowledge, and construction knowledge in the areas of tools, safety, basic electrical, basic construction, taking temperature and humidity measurements, and achieving desired conditions. NATE offers three tracks for Specialty Exams: Installation, Service, and Senior. There are different specialty tests depending on the test candidate’s interest and level of experience. To earn Senior certification, the candidate must have passed at least two qualifying Specialty certification tests by NATE.
